TSM has teamed up with Healthy Kids Running Series, a national non-profit organization to get young kids on the move. The series is held in over 150 towns across the country. The Towson Series is held at Dulaney High School on Sunday afternoons in the fall and spring. The current series has three race dates left, 10/1, 10/8, and 10/15. Races start at 4pm.
Brian Perez, Head Athletic Trainer at TSM and HKRS Community Coordinator was excited to bring this program to Maryland in the spring of 2016. “I first heard about the program through my sisters in New Jersey. Their kids really enjoyed it and they said, you should do this in your town.” And that is just what he did. Brian reached out the the HKRS national office and he was off an running. “HKRS national gives us all the resources and encouragement to get something like this off the ground”, says Perez. “The mission of the series matches TSM’s overall commitment to community health. Using that platform, we were able to engage numerous community partners as sponsors. We have running stores, restaurants and businesses on board and we continue to grow”.
There are 125 registrants from ages 2 through 12 for the fall 2017 series. They run races from 50 yards to 1 mile, based on age. Points are awarded each week and the runners with the most points after 5 weeks of running, receive a trophy. All runners who participate will receive a medal after the last race. “We strive to create a fun, positive environment that we hope will encourage young kids get outside and be active. It has been an absolute blast”, says Perez. There is still time to register online for the Towson series, and you can register on-site as well.
